Curiosity

An hypogeum (ipogeo) is an old underground building, mostly used as a sepulchre. This word is also used to indicate something which expands underground, such as hypogean flora or hypogean fauna. In 73, via della Stazione di Ottavia the “Ipogeo degli Ottavi” still stands in good conditions and can be visited with advance reservation. Once it was the sepulchral tomb of the Ottavi’s family, marked by a monumentality which was typical of the social position of the owner. It was discovered in 1920s, during the construction of the neighbourhood, at about km 9 of via Trionfale and then called Ottavia in memory of this family, whose members’ name was engraved on their sarcophagi. This is the reason of the street name Via Ipogeo degli Ottavi, of the railway station and of our Bed and Breakfast.
